Do you need advice on preparing for the Feb. 5  Writing Proficiency Exam?  Are you worried about writing a strong, well-argued essay?  Come to the Writing Center’s Proficiency Exam Workshop this Wednesday, February 2nd from  4 to 5:30 p.m. in Battelle 230.  The Center’s student consultants will offer tips on thesis development, proper essay construction, and more. We’ll work with the preparation packet (available in 228 Battelle), so read and bring the packet with you.

The Writing Center Kicks Off the New Semester

To kick off the new semester, the Writing Center will be hosting a table outside the bookstore today, Tuesday, January 18th from 11:00am to 2:00pm.  Writing Center Consultants will be on hand to answer questions about the Center and to talk about all the wonderful services we offer to AU students... free of charge!  We'll also have an Open House all day today at the Writing Center in 228 Battelle, so this is a great opportunity to stop in and chat, or to check out our great resources and handouts.  Stop by and say hello!

We look forward to seeing you today at our table in front of the bookstore and at our Open House in the Center!

The Writing Center will open for our regular hours starting tomorrow, Wednesday, January 19th.

The Writing Center Opens This Week!

The Writing Center opens this week for the fall semester!


The Writing Center is a place where American University students meet with other AU students to talk about writing. Our writing consultants are undergrad and graduate students themselves, so they understand your writing needs—and they're happy to work with you on any writing project you have, from essays to cover letters and application essays. Please see FAQ for more details.
In free, 45-minute consultations, we will work with you on issues such as:
  • Interpreting a writing assignment
  • Generating ideas
  • Locating and sharpening a thesis statement
  • Organizing ideas and research
  • Developing logical arguments
  • Polishing your prose
  • Finding strategies for revising
  • Identifying recurrent errors
